OVERVIEW
Over the summer, I took a trip overseas, and it was during this time that I really focused on trying to finish a fiction novel in record time. In the end I was able to accomplish this. When I returned to classes, I designed an app that was inspired by some of my struggles.
Time Frame
2024 | 10 Weeks
Objective
Design a writing app that could address common fiction writer pain points.
My Roles
Design, UX Research, Prototyping
Worked with a team to conduct interviews and surveys to inform design decisions.
Conducted user testing to inform design decisions.
Created a prototype based on user insights.
RESEARCH
In the 1st phase, we performed primary and secondary research to inform our project. I was responsible for a portion of the research, and performed competitive analysis on writing applications like Google Docs and Bear.
Our team also conducted surveys and interviews, and I participated in this process as well. From the data, we created personas and user journeys.

A few of the insights presented from interviewing fiction writers, our core demographic.
From the interviews and surveys, we generated personas and user journeys for our primary, secondary, and tertiary audiences.

USER TESTS
Now that we had our wireframe, and our flows to address pain points, we brought it before users in our target demographic range. We asked users to navigate the app, and attempt to perform certain tasks.

User testing in progress
With insights generated from the user testing, we iterated on the mobile app. We also developed a browser version based on user feedback. Below are some mockups and screenshots of the final results.

TAKEAWAYS
This project made me think differently about the writing process. A big theme of the troubles experienced by the writers we interviewed was inspiration, and we had to think about what we could implement into our app to address this.
Since we only 10 weeks to work on this project, it came to a close at that time, but if we had been given more time, we would have used it to conduct more rounds of research and iteration on the design.
